The Backstory

Dolly Parton has often credited her aunt Dorothy Jo as a significant influence on her music and career. Aunt Dorothy Jo was not only an evangelist but also a talented musician, playing the banjo, guitar, and writing songs. Parton has mentioned that her aunt’s songs were a big inspiration to her, and she often sought her advice and guidance in her early days as a singer-songwriter.

Aunt Dorothy Jo is also credited as a co-writer on some of Dolly Parton’s songs, including “Golden Streets of Glory”, which was featured on Parton’s 1971 gospel album of the same name. This album was a significant milestone in Parton’s career, showcasing her ability to write relatable songs and her connection to her faith.

Parton has spoken highly of her aunt, describing her as a hero and a source of inspiration. Her influence can be seen in Parton’s music, which often reflects her Appalachian roots and her strong Christian faith.

It's been said that this is Dolly's own words: "People often ask me who my influences were, they think I'm going to say some big names, and there were a few 'stars' I was impressed with. But my hero was my aunt Dorothy Jo. Mama's baby sister. She was not only an evangelist, she played banjo, she played guitar, and she wrote some great songs.

Rev. Dorothy Jo Owens Parton, of Sevierville, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008. A singer/songwriter, Dorothy Jo, along with Dolly, wrote "Old Time Preacher Man" which received a BMI Award. Dorothy Jo recently released a book titled "Dolly's Hero, Sharing Mighty Mountain Voices". She received an Honorary Doctorate of Sacred Music from Emanuel Baptist University, served as an evangelist, and was retired from Dollywood where she performed for many years.
